All the pretty little horses

We live in the old Irvington neighborhood of Portland, where most of the houses were built near the turn of the last century. Embedded in the concrete curb, in front of each house is a small iron hoop about three inches in diameter. Patty and I decided some time ago that the most likely purpose [...]

Review of 1491 by Charles Mann

This is the first comprehensive look at the people of the pre-Columbian Americas. I found the style to be very accessible and entertaining, and the book full of new information for this reader. Mann’s work here is considered to be “revisionist” in that he challenges many of the orthodoxies of anthropology and history in regard to Indigenous people. As an outsider to these disciplines –he is a journalist– he is able to filter both the new findings and the old prejudices with a more objective eye than most inside observers.

Desert Rock Blockade Day 9

Early Wednesday morning, the resisters of the Doodá Desert Rock Blockade were served with several Notices of Motion for Temporary Restraining Orders and an immediate injunctive relief on behalf of the Diné Power Authority/Sithe Global. The complaint, filed in the district of Shiprock, NM Tuesday afternoon, cites the unlawful entry of Burnham citizens and their interference with the process of the proposed Desert Rock power plant. DPA/Sithe’s actions are the follow up from a threatening letter which Stephen Begay (DPA) delivered to resisters Tuesday afternoon.

Making Noise on Global Warming

I don’t actually believe that ultimately the capitalist system can stop eating itself. Nevertheless, until we see the light, and stop feeding it our lives, these kinds of actions are absolutely necessary.

Mad Mel and the Maya

Very good article in The Nation on Mad Mel’s new racist depiction of our indigenous predecessors:
Mad Mel and the Maya
If you decide to go see it, read this article first. It may make you see it in a different way.
Several Indigenous groups have organized a boycott of Gibson’s film. I have issues with cultural [...]

Portland, Oregon
PCC Cascade Campus on N. Killingsworth is hosting sign-ups this morning for the new prescription drugs program mandated by the November election. Any Oregonian who isn’t covered by insurance is eligible for reduced prescription costs. The sign-up is sponsored by the AARP, I believe. It will be in the student center.

It’s the wave

Portland, Oregon
It happened this way. I was walking to my volunteer job as the Tuesday AP wire editor for KBOO evening news. I started across the street, and I saw the car coming up on me way too fast. I stopped. Just in time. The guy stops half way out in the cross street, waving [...]

Roadside Bomb reunion week

Portland, Oregon
I am blogging this afternoon from Tiny’s on MLK (near Tillamook). I sometimes come down here to blog or read the news, but today I came especially to see the art show by my friend Anais LaRue, a former Roadside Bomber, now living in Vancouver, B.C. Anais is a Canadian citizen, and couldn’t be [...]
